Allegations of intimidation, humiliation, and inappropriate conduct have prompted parents to demand a fair inquiry and administrative intervention
Barak Bani Digital Desk, Silchar, May 24: A serious allegation has triggered renewed public debate and concern within Silchar’s educational community. One of the city’s well-known and established educational institutions, Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, has come under scrutiny following a sensitive complaint that extends beyond the concerns of a single family. The issue has brought into focus long-standing concerns among many parents regarding student safety, accountability in educational institutions, administrative decision-making, and the overall relationship between schools and guardians.
According to the complainant’s family, dissatisfaction had been building for some time over the conduct of certain sections of the school administration, the manner in which decisions were being taken, and the way students were being treated. A recent incident allegedly brought these concerns into public view. Since the matter surfaced, discussions have intensified within Silchar’s academic circles, while reactions have also emerged across social media platforms.
Several parents alleged that although reputed educational institutions generally enjoy public trust, concerns and complaints raised by guardians are not always addressed with adequate importance. According to them, a healthy educational environment should not be judged solely by academic results; equal importance must be given to students’ mental well-being, dignity, and maintaining a constructive relationship with parents.
Members of civil society have argued that whenever such allegations arise, they should not be dismissed or suppressed but instead be addressed through a transparent inquiry to establish the facts. Educational institutions, they emphasize, are not merely centres of academic instruction but also fundamental spaces for shaping society.
A section of education experts observed that with increasing competition in the education sector, mental pressure on students has also grown significantly. Therefore, schools are expected to adopt more sensitive and responsible approaches and ensure that complaints are heard and addressed appropriately.
At the centre of the controversy is an allegation involving a Class V student who was reportedly assaulted by a fellow student during school hours. According to the family, visible injury marks were noticed on the child’s face after returning home, causing deep concern. The family questioned whether parents could feel secure about their children’s future if safety inside school premises itself became uncertain.
The parents stated that they approached the school authorities seeking clarification and demanded appropriate action against those responsible. However, they alleged that the matter subsequently took a different turn. According to them, despite informing the school administration, sharing photographs of the injured student through WhatsApp, and communicating the matter to the concerned teacher and the principal, no visible investigation or administrative action followed. Instead, the family claimed there appeared to be attempts to avoid addressing the issue.
The situation reportedly became more complicated when the parents met school authorities directly. According to the allegations, rather than focusing on resolving the issue or showing empathy toward the child’s emotional condition, certain remarks were allegedly made in the child’s presence that could negatively affect the student’s self-respect and mental well-being.
The controversy has since sparked strong reactions among sections of the parent community. Many believe that the responsibility of educational institutions today extends beyond academic instruction and examination performance to include student safety, emotional security, and responsiveness to parental concerns.
The family further alleged that comments were made suggesting that the child’s future would be “dark” because the parents trusted him “blindly.” If such allegations are proven to be true, questions may arise regarding whether the role of educational institutions is to guide students constructively or whether such remarks risk causing emotional distress.
Additionally, according to the complaint, discussions around issuing a Transfer Certificate (TC) reportedly emerged after the family sought an impartial inquiry, making the matter more sensitive. However, the authenticity of these allegations can only be established through proper administrative investigation.
Observers argue that the issue extends beyond a single case of physical altercation. The larger question being raised is whether parents can freely express concerns regarding their child’s safety, dignity, and emotional welfare without fear of adverse consequences.
Education experts have emphasized that schools today must establish credibility not only through academic excellence but also through human values, transparency, and emotional support systems. Schools play an important role in shaping confidence, personality, and the future of children.
Further allegations have also surfaced claiming that, following the incident, the injured student was made to stand outside the classroom for some time and was later shifted to another section. The family questioned the rationale and timing behind these decisions, although the school’s official position regarding these claims has not yet been publicly clarified.
The controversy reportedly intensified further after claims emerged regarding messages shared in a school WhatsApp group that some interpreted as intimidating in tone. A section of parents argued that raising questions and attempting to damage an institution’s reputation are not the same thing, and concerns raised in good faith should not automatically be viewed as attacks on the institution.
Some parents also expressed concern that despite paying substantial annual fees, they do not always feel comfortable expressing concerns openly. While they acknowledged that all private institutions cannot be treated alike, they believe such incidents have reopened important discussions around accountability and transparency in education.
Members of civil society noted that a healthy educational system must ensure that complaints can be raised safely and heard seriously. Educational institutions are expected to protect not only academic progress but also students’ emotional well-being and confidence.
Although the school administration’s detailed and official response to the allegations has not yet been made public, the issue has become a major topic of discussion within Silchar’s educational community. Many believe that an impartial investigation is necessary so that the facts can emerge and measures can be taken to prevent similar situations in the future.
When our correspondent contacted the concerned class teacher over the phone for a response regarding this sensitive matter, she declined to comment and advised the reporter to contact the school directly for detailed information and an official statement.
