Death Trap on the Road to Education: Assam University Road Sparks Massive Student Protest Over Its Deteriorating Condition

On Wednesday morning, the university campus and its adjoining areas witnessed large-scale demonstrations as students staged a massive road blockade to protest against the deplorable condition of the road and what they described as prolonged administrative negligence. Normal academic activities, including classes and examinations, were disrupted as thousands of students occupied the main approach road. Holding banners and placards, they raised a single demand in unison: the immediate repair and reconstruction of the road.

According to the protesting students, the entire stretch of road connecting Silchar town to Assam University has remained in an extremely dilapidated condition for years. They alleged that the road has virtually disappeared beneath countless large potholes and a severely damaged drainage system.

“We risk our lives every day just to attend the university. This is no longer a road it is a series of enormous craters. Even a slight spell of rain makes it impossible to distinguish between the roadway and deep potholes. Vehicles overturn frequently, pedestrians are injured, and yet the administration has shown no concern,” said one of the agitating students.

During the monsoon season, commuters say the condition of the road becomes almost indescribable. Even light rainfall fills the numerous potholes with muddy water, making them invisible and significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Students, faculty members, university staff, patients, and ordinary commuters are all compelled to travel through this hazardous route every day under constant threat to their safety.

Large and concealed potholes have frequently caused vehicles to break down, while auto-rickshaws have reportedly overturned on several occasions. Serious road accidents have become increasingly common. Ironically, the road leading to one of the country’s prominent Central Universities an institution dedicated to spreading knowledge and education has itself become a daily struggle for survival for the younger generation.

The deteriorating condition of the university’s primary access road has raised serious questions among residents and commuters alike. Many have questioned why the main approach to such a prestigious institution has been allowed to remain in such a deplorable state for years.

Students and local residents alleged that while political leaders make grand promises of development during election campaigns, little attention has been paid to addressing this basic yet critical public infrastructure issue. They accused the Public Works Department and other concerned authorities of remaining indifferent despite repeated complaints and growing public hardship.

The protesters further claimed that the continued administrative inaction has left them with no option but to launch public demonstrations. “The hands that should have been holding books and pens are now forced to carry protest placards,” remarked one participant.

Speaking to the media, the agitating students placed a clear demand before the administration and the concerned government departments: the road must be repaired and reconstructed immediately without any further delay or excuses.

The protesters also issued a stern warning, stating that Wednesday’s demonstration was only the first phase of their movement. If repair work is not initiated without delay, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days, including blocking the entire road network to press for their demands.

It now remains to be seen whether this unprecedented student protest will finally compel the authorities to act, or whether the issue will once again be buried under bureaucratic procedures while the safety of thousands of commuters continues to remain at risk. Only time will tell.
