Barak Bani Digital Desk, August 6: In a long-awaited move towards transforming Silchar’s road infrastructure and easing chronic traffic congestion, the district administration has launched a major eviction and demolition drive to facilitate the widening of the Meherpur–Silchar Medical College Road into a four-lane highway. The operation began at Birbal Bazar in Meherpur, clearing long-standing encroachments that had delayed the ambitious road expansion project.
The large-scale eviction drive commenced on August 5 in the Meherpur and Birbal Bazar areas on land already acquired for the project. To ensure that the operation proceeded smoothly and without any untoward incidents, the Cachar district administration made extensive preparations in advance. Public announcements were made through loudspeakers across Birbal Bazar and nearby commercial areas, instructing shopkeepers and local residents to remove their belongings and vacate the acquired land within the stipulated time.
The widening of this crucial road is considered essential for modernizing Silchar’s transport network and improving traffic flow. Demolition work will continue in phases across the acquired stretch. Officials have emphasized that the full cooperation of the public is vital for the timely completion of this major infrastructure project.
The eviction drive was personally supervised by Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), Aniruddha Nag. A large contingent of police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was deployed to maintain law and order throughout the operation.
Apart from facilitating the four-lane project, the authorities have also initiated immediate repairs to the severely damaged Meherpur Medical Road, which has long been plagued by large potholes, causing immense hardship to ambulance services, emergency vehicles, and daily commuters.
Following written directives from Assam Minister Kaushik Rai and administrative intervention by Silchar MLA Dr. Rajdeep Roy, along with clear instructions from the Cachar District Commissioner, the Public Works Department has begun repairing the dangerous potholes and resurfacing the road with fresh bitumen. Residents have welcomed this parallel initiative, as it provides immediate relief while the long-term four-lane construction progresses.
The Meherpur–Medical College Road is far more than just an urban roadway. It serves as a vital lifeline for the entire Barak Valley—including the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi—as well as patients travelling from the neighbouring states of Mizoram and Manipur. Hundreds of ambulances, emergency medical vehicles, and thousands of commuters rely on this route every day. However, the narrow two-lane road and widespread encroachments along both sides have led to persistent and severe traffic congestion for years.
Officials and local observers believe that once the eviction drive and four-lane expansion from Birbal Bazar are completed, Silchar’s traffic scenario will undergo a significant transformation.
A local businessman from Meherpur remarked that although the eviction has caused temporary inconvenience and financial losses for some, the wider public interest and the need to ensure quicker access to the medical college for critically ill patients make the project indispensable. He expressed support for the administration’s initiative.
The district administration has made it clear that the eviction drive will continue in phases over the coming days to expedite the project. As the obstacles are gradually removed, residents of Silchar now look forward to the day when the city’s long-standing traffic congestion becomes a thing of the past, ushering in a new era of smoother and more efficient transportation.
